Elopements vs. Micro Weddings-What’s the Difference?
Micro Wedding or Elopement?
It’s an ongoing debate in the wedding world- what actually makes something an elopement versus a micro wedding? And honestly, there’s no single “right” answer. But for us at OpenHearted Weddings, the difference comes down to: guest count, flow of the day, and overall experience priorities.
A modern elopement is not just a tiny wedding- and it’s definitely not just a “run away and get married” scenario anymore. Our Elopement couples usually involve a very small guest count, with a focus on the ceremony and (maybe) a short celebration afterward, rather than a full reception.
Our micro wedding packages, on the other hand, often still look & feel very much like a wedding- just on a smaller scale. Guest counts are a little higher than an elopement and the experience will often include traditional wedding elements- like guest seating, tables, linens, florals, a planned timeline, and familiar reception moments like a First Dance and cake cutting. Micro weddings typically unfold over a longer portion of the day and allow more time for connection, celebration, and structure- while still keeping things intimate and intentional. They’re perfect for couples who want a small guest list, but a full wedding experience.
At the end of the day, both options are beautiful- it just depends on how you want your celebration to feel! And we’re here to help you design either one in a way that feels completely you.
