Planning to tie the knot in Oklahoma? Congrats! Let’s walk through the essentials for getting your marriage license in the Sooner State-without the legal jargon.
First things first, both of you need to appear in person to apply for a marriage license.
Don’t worry; it’s a pretty straightforward process.
Head to any county court clerk’s office in Oklahoma. You’re not tied to the county where your wedding will take place, but keep in mind: the signed license must be returned to the same office where you got it. This means you’ll need to plan for a quick trip back after the big day.
One important note-your Oklahoma marriage license can’t be used in another state.
It’s for in-state use only.
Who’s performing your ceremony? While judges in most counties no longer perform civil weddings, there are plenty of licensed officiants to choose from (hey, we can help with that!).
Your marriage license is valid for 30 days from the date of purchase. After the ceremony, when you return it to the courthouse, they’ll process it and often hand it back immediately. This is also the perfect time to pick up certified copies—we recommend getting at least three.
Make sure you bring the right documents based on your age:
1. Pick up your Oklahoma marriage license at a county courthouse.
2. Bring the marriage license and two adult witnesses to wedding ceremony.
3. Officiant will complete license after wedding ceremony.
4. Return license to same county courthouse within required time frame.
