Oklahoma Marriage License Requirements

The Legal Basics

Getting Married in Oklahoma: What You Need to Know

Planning to tie the knot in Oklahoma? Congrats! Let’s walk through the essentials for getting your marriage license in the Sooner State-without the legal jargon.

Show Up Together

First things first, both of you need to appear in person to apply for a marriage license.

Don’t worry; it’s a pretty straightforward process.

Where to Get Your License

Head to any county court clerk’s office in Oklahoma. You’re not tied to the county where your wedding will take place, but keep in mind: the signed license must be returned to the same office where you got it. This means you’ll need to plan for a quick trip back after the big day.

One important note-your Oklahoma marriage license can’t be used in another state.

It’s for in-state use only.

Your Officiant Matters

Who’s performing your ceremony? While judges in most counties no longer perform civil weddings, there are plenty of licensed officiants to choose from (hey, we can help with that!).

Timing Is Everything

Your marriage license is valid for 30 days from the date of purchase. After the ceremony, when you return it to the courthouse, they’ll process it and often hand it back immediately. This is also the perfect time to pick up certified copies—we recommend getting at least three.

What to Bring

Make sure you bring the right documents based on your age:

  • Age 18 and older: A valid state or government-issued ID (like a driver’s license, birth certificate, or passport). There’s no waiting period for adults.
  • Age 16-17: You’ll need parental consent from a parent or legal guardian and a birth certificate.
  • Under 16: Marriage is prohibited unless you have a court order.

Additional Rules to Keep in Mind

  • Previously Divorced? If you were divorced in Oklahoma, you can’t remarry anyone other than your ex-spouse until six months after the divorce decree was filed.
  • No Blood Tests: Oklahoma doesn’t require a premarital blood test.
  • No Residency Requirement: You don’t have to live in Oklahoma to get married here.
  • Fees: The license fee is $50, but if you’ve completed premarital counseling, it’s just $5. Bring proof of counseling (an original certificate) to qualify for the reduced rate.

How to Get Married in Oklahoma:

1. Pick up your Oklahoma marriage license at a county courthouse.

2. Bring the marriage license and two adult witnesses to wedding ceremony.

3. Officiant will complete license after wedding ceremony.

4. Return license to same county courthouse within required time frame.
